Schedule 1
Schedule 1: A Surprisingly Addictive Drug Empire Simulator
The Hook I Didn’t Expect
I’ll be honest, when I first saw Schedule 1, the character graphics were an immediate turn-off. I wrote it off entirely based on visuals alone. Then a friend suggested we try it co-op, and 280 hours later, I’m here to tell you: this game is absolutely worth your money.
From Desert RV to Urban Empire
The campaign opens with a clear nod to Breaking Bad, you’re cooking product in a desert RV under your uncle’s questionable guidance. The DEA inevitably raids the operation, sending you fleeing to a larger city where the real game begins. A local mob blows up your mobile lab, stranding you in a motel room with nothing but ambition and a chemistry set.
What follows is a satisfying progression loop: unlock dealers across the city, research new product variants, expand to new locations, and critically find ways to launder your cash. The mob threat looms throughout, escalating from random attacks to a full-scale family showdown that serves as the story’s climax. It’s pulp crime fiction, but it knows exactly what it is and commits fully.
Why It Works
The core gameplay loop of production, distribution, and expansion hits that “just one more day” sweet spot that good management sims achieve. Researching new strains and optimizing your supply chain provides genuine strategic depth, while the ever-present threat of violence adds just enough tension to keep things from feeling like pure spreadsheet optimization.
Technical & Community Notes
The developers deserve credit for responsiveness. I reported several bugs via support email and later learned through the community that some of those issues are actively being addressed now. More importantly, Schedule 1 ships with full co-op support and modding tools. That openness to community creativity isn’t just good PR; it’s smart long-term development. Mods give players immediate ways to extend the experience while showing the devs which systems resonate most for future updates and DLC. Thats not the same as the devs should take all the mods and just make a new DLC with those mods, but it can give a direction on where to put down some resourses for a future DLC.
Verdict
Schedule 1 overcame my initial skepticism through pure mechanical charm. It’s rough around the edges visually and occasionally technically, but the gameplay loop is compulsive, the crime narrative hits its beats effectively, and the modding/co-op support suggests a healthy future. If you have any affection for empire-building sims or underdog crime stories, this deserves a spot in your library, even if, like me, you need a friend to push you past the screenshots first.
Pros: Addictive progression, responsive devs, mod support, co-op included.
Cons: Dated character visuals, occasional technical issues.
